 "Coolness for the money" 2009-11-02
By W. J. Roberts (Los Angeles)
I have used this lens in my arsenal for over a year. I have shot thousands of shots with it from fashion to still life to personal landscape details. I love it. I have no complaints or serious critiques. This is a budget lens, but it performs like a pro level if you work within its strengths -- speed, clarity, weight, quiet and the metal mount is an asset.

I've shot in multiple conditions from bright sunlight to deeply shadowed interiors. I have pushed the ISO to compensate for any aperture limitations and gotten great images. Well, let's just say that my clients have been very happy.

I tend to do dramatic product shots and portraits. When my stuff appears along side the guys that shoot with the Blads and Mamiyas, the images compete in the gallery (30x40 prints), online (global site launches), print collateral (national print).

I encourage any new shooter to go for it. Get this lens, learn it and work the possibilities. You'll be pleased with the creativity you can get from it. I am 4 year newbie and work with a Canon 350D (seriously). I get crazy looks from more experienced shooters all the time, but when they see my images in Hay House coffee table books and online with global brands, the looks turn into professional dialogue. I learned from Dean Semler that, "our eyes are still the best tools we have to shoot with." He said, "use what you have to the best of your ability to get YOUR shot ... by any means necessary." Sure, I aspire to use the heavy hitter labels, but not instead of, only including them to my current equipment mix.

Last note: Don't let anyone compel you to spend beyond your means to achieve a look. If the 'labels' went away, we would all be looking to use whatever equipment that provided us the best image that fit our vision.

God bless with success.

 "Great pictures" 2009-10-30
By M. G. Pfonner (Buffalo, NY)
I couldn't be more pleased with this lens. The pictures taken with it and my Pentax K-10 camera are crisp, clean and always in focus. It's a great intermediate range lens, and at the price here at Amazon, a real value. I paid 60 dollars less than my local camera store or the Sigma web site. For great quality and value, this is as good as it gets.

"Good budget lens but not perfect" 2009-09-14
By Scott (NJ)
I bought this to save some money on a zoom lens but found that the sharpness just wasn't there. I did all sorts of test shots using both the AF and the MF but both really didn't wow me. There is also no image stabilization and I had lots of camera movement in my photos. I went with the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras instead and returned this. The Canon lens is worth the extra money because the photos are super sharp. The Canon was also faster with the AF and much quieter and also has the image stabilization that really makes a difference. I took some up close photos as well as far away and both were very very sharp so this lens is a perfect all around lens. While its no macro lens, you still can get great up close shots with a little patience.

Pros:

Budget price

Ok photos

Good zoom length

Cons:

Photos not very sharp compared to the Canon

Noisy AF

Slow AF

No Image Stabilizer

"Good build, adequte focus, sharp enough pics" 2009-07-09
By M. Seither (Fayetteville, AR)
This lens has a nice quality feel to it. Real focus ring. Metal mount. Designed and focused for newer digital cameras. I got it for what I consider to be a great price. I have a used 20d and it compliments the camera nicely and takes very good pictures. I post process a bit to give them more punch in certain circumstances but all in all a very nice lens that focuses fast enough for most amateurs. It's not whisper quiet but I'm not sure I want to spend more money for a "quieter lens." The four stars are about value for the money. This lens has a quality feel and takes great pictures. I don't think you'll be disappointed, especially in this price class. I found another one at a good price for a Pentax (K100D) I have and jumped on it. Recommended.

"Lens cap strap [With modification}" 2010-01-07
By Joseph P. Portas (Elbert Colorado)
Works a promised with one exception:

Strap [just a stretchy cord] is too short for a lens longer than a standard lens.

I bought it for my NIKON D90 with 18-105 lens .... worked fine for a while but broke the cord after a month of use.

If the cord were longer I'm sure it would not have broken!

Easy fix ........ I replaced the 'cord' with a much longer 1/8" black ribbon from my wife sewing supplies.

Can remove the metal clip at the 'lens barrel' area with needle nose pliers and the 'dot' decal comes off easy

on the 'cap end' so you can rethread any length cord you want. Just make knots at the cap end and the lens end so

the keeper is secured. Works great ....... no tension on the keeper!

Then again just buy another "Keeper" they are so cheap!

 "So far so good" 2010-01-06
By songalex (Mexico,Mexico)
I purchased two one for a 58mm lenses and one for 77mm lense I was afraid that it breaks when i put it to the bigger lenses so i did with care trying not to open it to much to get inside, also I cleaned the surface with cleaning clothes trying to avoid the loss of sticking.

And so far none of the defectives or quality issues of other reviews have happened, remains one piece, remains attached to the cap keeper.

the cap keeper is cheap, but i leave the cap dangle with no extra care, i put and remove the cap often on my 77mm lenses because i have not buy the protection filter and it remains on good shape, no signs of warning.

I recommend the product, but i took the other reviews in mind on "my instalation instructions"

"EF 28-105 Great all around lens" 2010-02-17
By cosper11
I was looking for an inexpensive everyday "walkaround" lens for my new Canon Rebel T1i. I have a Disney vacation planned for the spring and wanted something that I can leave on the camera all the time so I'm not searching my camera bag for lenses. I was really ready to buy either the Tamron 18-270 or the sigma 18-250, but after seeing their price tags, I opted to do a bit more research since they both go for over $500; closer to $600 for the Tamron. That's a bit more than I wanted to spend. After all, with that much cash we can actually "do" more Disney instead of just look back at it in pictures.

After doing a bit of research for a cheaper alternative, I stumbled across this at my local camera shop. The one I bought was used, but was cosmetically perfect with little to no dust inside. Picked it up for $200 plus a hood. Construction feels really solid

So here's the performance run down:

This is definitely an outdoor lens for how I like to shoot. Without image stabilization, you'll want to avoid shutter speeds under 1/60 hand held (1/160 and over is ideal). I've been working on my steady hands and have been able to get a decent picture hand held, braced against something at 1/20, but that's a rare occasion. Use flash indoors or increase ISO or both. I'm a fan of natural lighting so I try not to use flash. For indoors I usually switch to my 50mm f1.8 prime if I can (if I have room to move about).

Now for where it shines: Since I'll be outside most of the time at Disney, low lighting and indoors did not concern me too much. I really wanted something with decent reach and 105mm is pretty good. Not really telephoto, but I can always crop if I need to. Most of the time I'll be shooting pictures of my daughter so I better not be too far away!

For a crop sensor camera (all rebels, 50D, etc) 28mm isn't that wide, but seems to be just wide enough for me. I'm thinking of the occasions that I'll need to put my 18-55mm IS back on, maybe where we are cramped?

I am a fan of fast focus. My daughter is 4 years old and does not slow down. What good is a shot if it's out of focus? The USM on this lens is lightning fast! From close range to infinity is well under a second and with full time manual focus, you can quickly override it. It can search a bit in low lighting, but as I said, I use this mainly outdoors in lots of light. Oh, and it's very, very quiet.

As far as image quality, set it to f8 and it's sharp as a tack, especially in the center. At f4.5 at 105m the edges do get soft, but with a pretty nice bokeh. At 105, I'd even stop down to f11 and it's really sharp (just check out picks of my cat maggie and a bluejay spotted in the back yard added to the gallery of this lens - both at 105mm, f4.5 and f8 respectively).

Overall, I really like this lens. It's relatively small compared to superzooms like Canon's 18-200, Tamron's 18-270 and Sigma's 18-250. I may try to get one of them used in a year or two, but this lens is a really good bang for the buck. Good image quality, fast zoom, fairly light... This lens is a keeper.

 "An excellent sleeper lense!" 2009-11-23
By J. Rios (So. Cal)
As a model photographer who often does outdoor photoshoots at Joshua Tree, I needed an excellent compact zoom lense which would give me more reach than what I already had, Tamron 28-75 f2.8, because I often found myself too far away on one boulder while the model was on another. Well, the Canon 28-105 f3.5-4.5 lense fulfills this purpose. Even though it's slower, I still get good DOF (depth of field) and the speed hasn't been a problem; of course, that would not be the case if one was using this lense in low light situations. Not only that, but I've noticed that it, on the average, gives sharper pictures than my Tamron lense. The lense is very compact, having the size and weight of my Canon 85 f1.8 lense which is another plus allowing me to have the lense on the camera in my backpack without taking up much space. It's actually more compact than the Tamron and I'm able to use the same size B+W filters as my Canon 85mm f1.8 and 50mm f1.4 lenses, which saved me money. So I heartily recommend this lense for anyone who needs a good quality moderate length zoom lens and can't afford to pay $800+, I paid $250 for it. This lense won't disappoint.

"Inconsistant results with 2004 Rebel" 2009-08-21
By R.P.D. (New York City)
I have found the image results from this lens in combination with my 2004 Canon Rebel to be incredibly inconsistent. It can not take the same picture twice in a row. Color values, saturation, and particularly focus vary widely with each shot, even in multi-shot mode.

This lack of predictability makes capturing images a crap-shoot at best. More than a few times I have been disappointed with the results. I would not recommend this lens, particulary for older Digital Rebels.

The Canon EF 28-105mm lens was a great purchase. I could bring it anywhere for those every day shots and still zoom in or out as much as I needed! My portraits and scenery shots turned out great. The quality of the lens is very durable and I have loved the crispness of my pictures using this lens. A great buy if you only have enough money to purchase one lens for your SLR.

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II Lens for EOS Digital SLR Rebel XT, XTI, 20D & 30D Digital Cameras

Buy Cheap Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II Lens for EOS Digital SLR Rebel XT, XTI, 20D & 30D Digital Cameras From Here Now!

Canon's redesigned compact EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II autofocus zoom lens (approximately a 28-90mm lens in 35mm format) is smaller and lighter than conventional lenses because of the shorter back focus distance. By reducing the distance from the rear of the lens to the imaging sensor and reducing the size of the image circle to accommodate the camera's imaging sensor size, the lens produces high image quality with superb resolution at all focal lengths.

By optimizing the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II lens coatings, Canon's engineers have effectively minimized the chance of flare and ghosting which are more prone to occur with digital cameras than with film cameras. The coatings reduce reflections off the rear of the lens to deliver crisp, undistorted digital images.

"Get the new, improved version." 2009-02-26
By Itsmeagain! (Nobamaburg)
The newer Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens is the latest version of this kit lens, and it is a significant improvement over this 'has been' lens. The new version is now the standard kit lens included with many EOS cameras. Best of all, the new one sells for much less than $200 dollars, so I wonder why they still try to sell this inferior lens for such a high price? It doesn't even have the IS (image stabilization) that is included in the new version.

There must be people gullible enough to pay good money for below par products, when better can be found for less; if they would just take a few minutes to do a bit of research before purchasing. I have found several photo review sites that give good reviews to the new lens, but this old version is pretty much trashed in the reviews.

The old lens will have I or II in the name, but not IS; the new (better) lens will have IS in the name, but not I or II.

I do have the 'newest version' (EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS) lens and it is an OUTSTANDING lens for the low price! It is a good walk around lens on my 40D due to its light weight, relatively small size, zoom range, and quick auto-focusing. And I really like the image stabilization!

"Only Someone Who Hasn't/Doesn't Read Reviews Would Buy This Unusably Slow Lens" 2009-01-05
By Ingo
This lens is bad. Not horrible, cuz Canon doesn't make horrible lenses. But considering the other offerings available for the same, less or slightly more money, buying this lens should only become an option if its price point drops to twenty or thirty dollars and then only as a backup. It just isn't worth more money than that.

At 3.5-5.6 it is veeeeeery slow. If you are taking photos indoors, it is unusably slow. Buy the IS version if you need a wide angle zoom. Or for a hundred fifty bucks more than the IS version of this, buy the tamron or sigma f/2.8 wide angle zooms. Much better build qualities than this lens and faster as well.

"Opteka HD² 0.20X Professional Super AF Fisheye Lens for Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, XTi, XS, XSi..." 2010-02-23
By J. DEMELO (Boston, MA)
Just received this conversion lens. Like other reviews have said, you get what you pay for. But in this case, this isn't such a bad thing. If you want to have some fun experimenting with a wide angle, fisheye lens before purchasing a 600 to 900 dollar professional option, it's definitely worth it. Fisheye pictures are a bit of a novelty, and the whole fun factor might wear out over time. All the more reason to go with an inexpensive option.

1. I'm not entirely sure why this would matter but the lens is in fact made in China, not Japan. With that being said, I received a solid, well made lens and the glass is crystal clear. I was impressed with the construction. The rubber grips work nicely, and the threads allow the lens to effortlessly and smoothly screw into your lens. It also comes with two adapter rings which allow it to fit anthing from 52 to 58mm. It fits my Canon 18 - 55mm kit lens with the largest of the two adapters. Without either of the two adapters, it fits nicely into my Canon prime f/1.8 50mm lens. It also comes with a mostly worthless cleaning cloth and a small, felt-like pouch to store the lens in when not in use. The pouch was a nice touch.

2. The lens is fairly heavy. While this might feel good when you hold it, I kind of wonder if the weight might affect the "gears" inside my kit lens while the camera is auto-focusing. I can't help but feel like it might add significant strain. Doesn't seem to be an issue so far, but may be worth mentioning. The weight does seem to slow down the auto-focus on my 18-55mm kit lens just slightly... though not enough to really be concerned. I suppose I'll have to see any effects from long term use, but I imagine my Canon lenses are built well enough to handle the extra weight.

3. Nowhere on the lens or box does it say Canon, or for Canon, or XS, XT, XSi, 30D, etc...

With that being said, this lens should fit any camera as long as the lens is between 50mm to 58mm. It should also fit video cameras. It's just a general SLR conversion lens that should fit most lenses with the help of the adapter rings.

4. I don't really understand all of the fuss about the HD aspect of it. If you hold the lens to your eye and look through it like a looking glass, it is remarkably bright and clear and indeed "HD". Otherwise, on the camera it looks just fine. Nothing to rave about.

5. As previous reviews mentioned, when zoomed all the way out you get the full "round" fisheye look. You can see the edge of the lens, but it's a nice effect and fun to use. Zoom in a bit and you get a nice wide angle shot. The edges do appear to fuzz a bit, but I don't see this as a huge issue since it is an inexpensive lens, after all.

All in all, I really look forward to using it more. No regrets with the purchase. Photography is an expensive hobby, and I'm happy there are inexpensive options out there for people who are just looking to try out some different shots.

 "FUN" 2010-02-13

It is just an add on and not a true fisheye but it is fun to play with. The pictures turned out fine. Its neat to try new things and at this price it was worth it.

"Great buy for the price" 2010-02-03

For only spending $60, this lens attachment gives great images. Of course, you'd get better pictures with a fisheye lens, but who really wants to spend $700 odd dollars?

 "Fun but not Quality" 2010-01-18
By Neal Fassnacht (nealf)
I just got this for christmas and it is fun to play around with but I was disappointed with how much it affected the quality of the images. It's a cool toy and definitely cheaper than buying a real fish-eye - but you get what pay for and in this case you don't get a sharp image. I would recommend it to someone who just wants to take some shots for fun and isn't worried about having prints made.

"Great value, great photos, fun shooting!" 2010-01-05
By Justin Ryan (Grayslake, IL USA)
I shivered when I saw the prices of fisheye lenses for my Canon XSi until I came across a few of these kind of lenses which instead of integrating into the camera itself, they screw onto the end of the existing lens. This affordable lens takes fantastic wide-angle photos, however there is a pretty extreme barreling effect which I expected after using a 35mm Fisheye by Lomo. I am amazed at the clarity of the photos I have obtained. I was expecting more distortion, chromatic aberration, etc. but this does not seem to be the case with this lens.

Does this compare to a $600 180 degree lens? Probably not. But for someone who isn't using such a lens professionally, this is the perfect starter to get you a taste of what the wide angle can produce.

My ONLY complaint is that the lens cap that came with does not fit with the adapter ring, and so the ring must be removed each time I put the lens away in it's little bag. Nothing serious.

Final thoughts: It's fun, it's cheap, and it produces high quality photos! What more can you ask for?

 "wide angle attachment" 2010-02-03

I would like the results to be a little bit wider but the results are well worth the cost. My lense needs to be set to the widest setting before screwing on the attachment.

"Bad quality lens. But it does what it says." 2009-12-07
By Uncle J
I give it 2 stars because the price is about right. If you want to do real nice wide angle shots, you may want to spend more cash and get the right gear. But if you just want to shoot around and you are beginning, then it's ok.

DO NOT USE FLASH WITH THIS, it leaves a nasty shadow on the corners and bottom of the picture.

"Decent results considering the price." 2009-12-05
By H. S. Pope (Richmond, VA)
I purchased this lens attachment in lieu of purchasing a brand-name wide angle lens. I wasn't expecting much, since it was only $10. That said, I was pleasantly surprised by the results.

I tested this attachment with my Canon EOS XSi and an EF-S 18-55mm lens, fully closed to 18mm. I shot images with and without the wide angle attachment, and noted a clear difference between the width of the target area. I viewed the images side by side on my large monitor (32" LCD HDTV) and did not see a significant loss of image quality. There was slight loss of sharpness, but not much.

Using the macro attachment with the same lens, I noticed a clear difference in the minimum focal distance of the lens, but I did not notice any loss of picture quality. The close up image was very sharp when viewed on the computer screen.

In both cases, autofocus did not work properly, so I had to use manual focus to achieve the best pictures. When holding the shutter button down halfway, the green focus indicator within the view finder worked properly though, and helped me get the best focus.

There are clearly higher quality lenses that serve this purpose, but this lens (wide angle and macro) is definitely something I will carry in my bag until I can purchase those more expensive lenses. It is definitely worth the $10, if you need something now.

NOTE: I also added pictures showing my test results. Follow the "See all # customer images" link below the main product picture to see my examples.

"At this price I expected MUCH more" 2010-01-14
By Rikkyloo (Portland, OR USA)
The problem with this camera is the pictures! And after all is said and done what else do you really care about? I bought this camera for my wife who is an avid amateur family photographer. She wanted something which would take a great quality photo of the things going on around her. There are plenty of super-portable, feature loaded minis to choose from these days. Any one of them can take a decent snap shot. From there, this camera is a big step up in price and a big step down in portability. The promise is that with all it's quality craftsmanship and high tech features you will get real bang for your buck in picture quality. Sorry folks, it just is not the case. Set to full automatic - where all the bells and whistles should really show their stuff - this camera regularly overexposes ordinary daylight photos. It routinely washes out indoor shots with its own flash. And the auto focus is nothing to brag about. My wife is not a photographer. She is an ordinary person who wanted to have fun taking really good family photos. This camera was a huge let down.

 "Perfect for the price" 2009-11-17
By Anton Pienaar
As it goes with cameras, it's usualy more about the photographer than the camera. This camera is fantastic for it's price range, and it can perform with much more expensive cameras in many instances with a small amount of know-how. When it comes to dslr cameras you can't go wrong with a canon. It's a pity though that this model has no hard drive, so it's not possible to take video clips...which would've been nice

 "Canon Digital Rebel XTi" 2009-11-14
By Leon E. Haskins (Wine Country of the Finger Lakes)
This camera is easy to use, I bought this so I could take pictures of my Grandchildren. One is a brand new Granddaughter and catching her smile with my point and shoot just did not work as well as my 35mm Konica SLR. With film processing becoming very difficult to find in my area, I decided to go with a digital SLR. The first 2 weekends I had this camera I shot over 200 pictures. It was nice to be able to shoot with a SLR again. I would recomend this to anyone who used a 35mm SLR and wants to go digital

I did so much research I thought my mind would explode w/ all the info! But after going over all the info and reviews ect. I bought the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi. It really is an easy to use camera for beginners. I am taking pictures like a pro. I don't have to use the extra settings, but when I do they are easy to understand and use. I am soooo happy w/ my camera and would never trade it for another!

 "Perfect for the amateur" 2009-10-14
By Candace Beauchamp (Austin, TX)
A couple of years ago, I decided to step up from point and shoot cameras and looked into taking a photography class and getting a "real" camera. This is the camera I purchased. Absolutely adore it. I've taken more pictures in the past 2 years than I ever have.

The auto modes are fantastic (I realize this is an older model, one day perhaps I can upgrade), but even more important - it's easy to switch to manual as well. This is a great camera to learn on it and I've managed to take some really great photographs with it.

I'm no professional. I don't want to be a professional. I just like to tinker. This intro priced camera does all of that and more. I won't get into the technical side of it, enough Amazon reviewers have done that and you can certainly read the product description, but if you are looking to get into photography and need a starter camera, this is the one I would recommend.

If I had to do it all over again, I would probably choose to not get the kit lens and purchase one locally where I can play with it. I quickly replaced the kit lens with a Tamaron I fell in love with. But lenses are always such a personal thing to me.
